For over a century, Solid Energy and its predecessors have produced coal as a cost-effective means to power many of New Zealand's key energy-intensive industries and exporters.  Industries like dairy, steel, cement, timber and industrial processing that rely on low-cost energy to remain competitive in world markets.

The book 'The Pebble Puppy' seeks simply to record the story of the natural origins of coal in a way that is accessible to children of today, as many of them will grow up never seeing a piece of coal or understanding the role it has played in the development of the modern world and its continued importance today in generating electricity and the power industry.
